The practice of boiling lobsters alive while they are conscious is set to be prohibited in England to enhance animal welfare standards. Government officials have stated that live boiling is not an acceptable method of euthanizing crustaceans, and they are preparing to release alternative guidelines. This initiative is part of the long-awaited Animal Welfare Strategy introduced by the Government, aimed at implementing various policies to enhance the well-being of pets and animals in various settings.
Countries like Switzerland, Norway, and New Zealand have already made boiling lobsters alive illegal. Animal welfare organizations suggest that using methods like stunning lobsters with an electric gun or chilling them before boiling is a more humane approach. Ben Sturgeon, the chief executive of Crustacean Compassion, praised the decision, highlighting the unnecessary pain inflicted on conscious animals during live boiling and advocating for the use of humane alternatives like electrical stunning.
Former Tory minister Zac Goldsmith also expressed support for the ban, condemning the cruelty of boiling animals alive. In 2022, the Tories passed a law acknowledging that invertebrates such as octopus, crabs, and lobsters are sentient beings capable of experiencing pain similar to other animals.
The Animal Welfare Strategy includes additional measures such as investigating the prohibition of electric shock collars for pets, addressing dog attacks on farm animals, and banning the caging of hens. Trail hunting and the use of snares will also be outlawed as part of this strategy. Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds described the UK as a nation of animal lovers and hailed the strategy as the most ambitious in a generation.
Under the new plans for pets, there will be reforms in dog breeding practices to enhance health and welfare, including putting an end to puppy farming. The strategy also focuses on improving conditions for farm animals, aiming to phase out confinement systems like colony cages for laying hens, implementing humane slaughter regulations for farmed fish, and promoting the use of slow-growing meat chicken breeds. Additionally, efforts will be made to move away from pig farrowing crates and address welfare concerns related to the use of carbon dioxide for stunning pigs.
