After enjoying a restful holiday season with their family, Prince William and Princess Kate have resumed their royal responsibilities by attending their first engagement of 2026. The royal couple visited Charing Cross Hospital in West London to show appreciation for the dedicated work of NHS staff during a challenging winter period.
This visit showcased the important efforts of NHS Charities Together, an organization that William and Kate support as Joint Patrons. The couple, who took on this role during the Covid-19 pandemic, interacted with healthcare workers during their tea break, engaging in discussions about the challenges they face amidst the winter health crisis.
Princess Kate, dressed in a burgundy suit, connected with a volunteer assisting chemotherapy patients, who shared insights into the lengthy stays patients and visitors endure. Kate, a cancer survivor, empathetically acknowledged the situation, expressing solidarity with William by her side.
Following this, William and Kate met with volunteers under the charity’s management, who contribute to enhancing patient care and easing the workload for healthcare professionals. One of the volunteers, Gulsenem Vural, 21, described the visit as an unforgettable experience, emphasizing the couple’s genuine interest in the hospital’s operations.
Concluding their visit, William and Kate participated in a roundtable discussion with NHS charity leaders, policymakers, and philanthropists to address the significance of philanthropy within the healthcare sector.
Ellie Orton OBE, Chief Executive of NHS Charities Together, expressed delight at the royal couple’s visit, noting the positive impact it had on healthcare staff and volunteers during a challenging period.
Initially scheduled to visit the hospital alone, William was joined by Kate in a spontaneous decision. For safety reasons, Kate chose not to wear her iconic engagement ring, previously owned by Princess Diana, as it could pose an infection risk due to its large stones.
This visit preceded Kate’s upcoming 44th birthday and followed the family’s appearance on Christmas Day at St Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham. William and Kate were last seen alongside their children George, Charlotte, and Louis during the annual Christmas service.
