The organizers of Your Party aimed to move past contentious disputes during the recent founding conference. Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn urged unity, emphasizing the importance of coming together in his address to over 2,000 delegates. Despite rumors of disruptions, the event proceeded without major incidents, unlike the party’s history of internal conflicts since its inception.
Corbyn, who returned to the same stage where he last appeared as Labour leader in 2018, cautioned against division and emphasized the need to embrace the opportunity to advocate for real socialism and social justice. However, the conference faced turmoil as former Labour MP Zarah Sultana expressed disappointment over expulsions from the party just before the event. She criticized the actions, stating a commitment to inclusivity and rejecting a culture of witch hunts.
Although initially boycotting the conference, Sultana later addressed attendees, acknowledging shortcomings in the party’s establishment. The voting members decided on a committee-based leadership structure over a single leader model, signaling a departure from the conventional leadership approach favored by Corbyn.
Concluding the conference, Corbyn revealed the official name chosen by the members, with “Your Party” emerging as the preferred option. Stressing the importance of unity and collective effort, he emphasized the significant impact of their actions on people nationwide as the party embraces a new leadership model. The future success of the party will depend on how effectively they implement these changes.
