“From Screen to Politics: TV Personalities Make Waves in Political Arena”

In the past, only a few individuals could transition from entertainment to politics, with business moguls dominating political spheres while actors like Ronald Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenegger held significant political positions in America.

Nowadays, having a background in television or film can actually benefit one’s political career. For instance, Tory MP Esther McVey started her career on GMTV, while Robert Kilroy-Silk moved from politics to TV and back to politics. Similarly, US President Donald Trump gained fame through The Apprentice, while Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky was a TV comedy star who won a local version of Strictly Come Dancing.

Reality TV personality Spencer Pratt, famous for his appearance on Celebrity Big Brother with his wife Heidi Montag, recently announced his candidacy for mayor of Los Angeles following the destruction of their home in wildfires last year. This trend of television personalities entering politics has seen both successes and failures.

One such example is Katie Price, who ran for MP under her modeling name Jordan in the Stretford and Urmston constituency but did not succeed. However, Price has since become a vocal advocate against online abuse, particularly targeting disability hate crimes. Another case is Gogglebox’s Josh, who transitioned from television to government work but fell short in his bid for a Labour MP position in Hertsmere.

Renowned British TV and stand-up star Eddie Izzard, although unsuccessful in his recent political endeavors, has been actively involved in Labour activism. Tracy Brabin, known for her role in Coronation Street, successfully transitioned into politics and served as a Labour MP before becoming the Mayor of West Yorkshire.

Before his presidency, Donald Trump, a reality TV star, gained massive popularity through The Apprentice, amassing a substantial fortune. Notably, Martin Bell, a former BBC news reporter, donned his signature white suit during his political campaign against Neil Hamilton in Tatton, securing a significant victory.

Television personality Gyles Brandreth briefly left his television career to serve as a Tory MP before returning to the screen. Spencer Pratt’s announcement of running for mayor of Los Angeles at a rally organized for wildfire victims underscores the increasing trend of TV personalities venturing into politics with a strong message for change.
