QR codes have become an increasingly popular tool in recent years, offering convenience but also posing a significant risk. These simple black and white codes are ubiquitous, allowing users of both Android and iPhone devices to quickly access websites, download apps, log into services, and make payments by scanning them with their phone cameras. While QR codes save time and effort, they are also being exploited by cybercriminals who create fake versions to steal personal information.
Although QR code attacks are not new, they are on the rise and becoming more sophisticated.
A concerning scam targeting users is known as “brushing.” In this deceptive scheme, criminals send unsolicited packages containing a phony QR code to recipients’ homes. These packages typically arrive without sender information, piquing curiosity. The recipients are then prompted to scan the code to identify the sender or process a return, unknowingly exposing themselves to potential fraud.
Victims of this scam risk divulging sensitive personal details, which can be used by cybercriminals for financial theft and further fraudulent activities.
According to cybersecurity firm NordVPN, the issue is growing, with an estimated 26 million people possibly being redirected to malicious websites through fake QR codes.
“QR codes have inadvertently become an entry point for cybercriminals. Unlike typical phishing emails where warning signs are recognized, physical QR codes often instill trust,” explained Marijus Briedis, NordVPN’s Chief Technology Officer.
“Approach unexpected QR codes with the same caution as unsolicited links in your email inbox.”

• Verify the source of a QR code before scanning. Is it from a trusted entity or an unknown sender? If unsure, refrain from scanning and reach out to the sender using official contact information.
• Many smartphones allow users to preview website links before opening. Take advantage of this feature. If the link appears suspicious or unexpected, avoid proceeding.
• Ensure your phone’s security software is up-to-date. Utilize a VPN while browsing the internet to enhance protection against malicious websites and data breaches, even if you accidentally access a harmful site.
• Share these safety tips, particularly with individuals less familiar with technology, to help friends and family stay secure. Scammers often target those unaware of such tactics.
While QR codes simplify tasks, it is essential to exercise caution before scanning anything on your smartphone and avoid sharing personal information without confirming the legitimacy of the source.
