“Widow blames cricket board for coach’s suicide”

A recent inquest revealed that Graham Thorpe’s widow believes that more support from the England and Wales Cricket Board could have prevented his tragic death last August. Thorpe, a former England assistant coach and renowned batter, struggled with anxiety and depression after leaving his coaching role in 2022. The coroner highlighted deficiencies in the care provided to Thorpe leading up to his death, ultimately ruling it as suicide.

Despite the ECB funding treatments and extending health insurance for Thorpe post-departure, his widow expressed that additional support during the transition period could have made a crucial difference. She emphasized that if his cricketing career had not abruptly ended, he might still be alive today. Amanda Thorpe criticized the remote support offered, stating that it was inadequate and failed to address his worsening mental state.

The widow highlighted the importance of a robust support system during such transitions, noting that Thorpe’s deteriorating condition was evident but sufficient help was not forthcoming. The ECB has been approached for comments on the matter. If you or someone you know needs help, The Samaritans provide 24/7 support through various channels, emphasizing that every individual matters.
