Ahead of the upcoming Qatar Grand Prix weekend, Max Verstappen pointed out McLaren’s mistakes as key factors in his ongoing battle for the Formula 1 title. Recently, McLaren’s errors have not only kept Verstappen in the championship hunt but have also positioned him to challenge a British driver for the title on the final day.
Verstappen clinched his first F1 championship by surpassing Lewis Hamilton on the last lap of the controversial 2021 Abu Dhabi race. Now, with a mere 12-point gap behind Lando Norris, the Dutch driver is aiming for his fifth consecutive title.
The championship race has intensified with Oscar Piastri trailing four points behind Verstappen, setting up a rare three-way title showdown for the final race, a scenario not seen since 2010 when Sebastian Vettel claimed the championship on the final day. Verstappen acknowledged the significance of the tight competition and expressed determination to give his best effort.
A lighthearted Verstappen highlighted McLaren’s repeated errors, which Red Bull subtly mocked by sending their strategy chief to collect the constructors’ trophy on the podium alongside Verstappen. The McLaren team leadership, visibly shaken by the outcome, refrained from immediate interviews, emphasizing that Norris and Piastri both have fair chances of winning the championship.
Despite Piastri’s persistent efforts, the odds are stacked against him, as Norris only needs a podium finish to secure the championship. Notably, Norris benefited from a late-race incident involving Kimi Antonelli, which significantly impacted the title race’s dynamics.
The race’s post-analysis sparked debates, with conflicting views between teams on the on-track incidents. Verstappen’s engineer hinted at favoritism towards Norris, while McLaren’s rivals defended their integrity and dismissed the accusations as baseless.
