The leader of the trade union movement has cautioned that if people do not experience an improvement in their well-being by 2026, the Labour Party risks losing more support to the Reform party.
Highlighting the challenges of rising living costs impacting households, TUC General Secretary Paul Nowak emphasized the importance of addressing these issues as voters prepare for elections in Scotland, Wales, and local elections in England next year. Nowak stressed the need for Labour to directly engage with Nigel Farage and the Reform party, stating that “working class people cannot afford Reform.”
Nowak pointed out that an improvement in living standards is crucial to prevent individuals from being swayed by Reform’s deceptive promises. A recent Deltapoll survey commissioned by The Mirror revealed that the cost of living is the top concern for Britons, with respondents urging Keir Starmer to prioritize addressing this issue in 2026, followed by healthcare and immigration.
In terms of government priorities, controlling the cost of living ranked highest at 61%, followed by healthcare at 55%, and immigration at 41%. Economic growth, crime reduction, and public service improvements were of lesser importance according to the survey results.
Nowak emphasized the need for boosting living standards to instill confidence in people to make significant purchases without economic concerns. He also underscored the potential risks of disillusionment with mainstream politics benefiting Nigel Farage and stressed the importance of countering divisive rhetoric.
Acknowledging past mistakes by Labour, Nowak urged the party to communicate its achievements effectively and uphold its core values without hesitation. He called for a relentless focus on improving living standards and demonstrating support for working-class communities.
In addressing concerns about leadership speculation within Labour, Nowak advised staying focused on addressing the immediate challenges faced by working people rather than internal party dynamics. He commended certain Labour policies, such as the workers’ rights program, as steps in the right direction, emphasizing the importance of delivering on promises made to the public.
The Prime Minister’s commitment to addressing the cost of living in his Christmas message was noted, with plans for various policies to be implemented in 2026 to alleviate financial burdens. Despite some pessimism among voters regarding their household finances, the government aims to implement measures to improve the economic situation for all citizens.
Labour MPs echoed the government’s focus on addressing the cost of living and affirmed their dedication to initiatives aimed at supporting working families across the country. The emphasis remains on ensuring that policies are geared towards benefiting the majority of the population and not just a select few.
