“WhatsApp Users Beware: New ‘Ghost Pairing Scam’ Targets Personal Data”

A new cyber scam aimed at WhatsApp users has emerged, posing a threat to personal data security. With the rising number of online scams and privacy breaches, it is crucial to maintain vigilance and avoid engaging with suspicious links or unknown software.

Scammers are becoming more sophisticated, making it challenging to identify fraudulent text messages or emails without prior knowledge. One such scam, known as the “ghost pairing scam,” is currently targeting WhatsApp users, emphasizing the importance of being cautious about incoming messages on the platform.

A social media user named Caroline recently raised awareness about this scam through a TikTok video, warning that falling for this deceptive tactic could grant hackers remote access to sensitive data.

The scam operates by sending a seemingly authentic message, either from WhatsApp itself or a contact in the user’s list, urging the recipient to take action to secure their account. By forwarding a received code as instructed, the user inadvertently links their WhatsApp account to the scammer’s device, granting unauthorized access.

Once a hacker gains access to a user’s WhatsApp account, they can view messages, photos, and even send messages on the user’s behalf, potentially deceiving others in the contact list. Importantly, the scam does not immediately disrupt the user’s access or functionality on WhatsApp, making it challenging to detect the breach.

To protect against such scams, users should never share WhatsApp codes with anyone. WhatsApp does not request code sharing via text messages, and if someone in the contacts requests a code, it is advisable to ask them to resend it to their own number instead of sharing received codes.

Users can also check their linked devices in the app settings to ensure security. By reviewing linked devices and removing any unrecognized ones, users can prevent unauthorized access to their accounts.

Caroline’s video received positive feedback from viewers, with many expressing gratitude for the awareness and pledging to share the information with vulnerable family members. Some shared personal experiences of encountering the scam but taking immediate steps to secure their accounts.

By staying informed and following preventive measures, users can safeguard their personal data and prevent falling victim to cyber scams.
