“Slow Lane: UK’s Worst Street for Broadband Speeds”

Access to high-speed broadband is a common desire, but unfortunately, some areas in the country are still struggling with slow internet connections. Recent data from Broadband Genie has identified Heol-Y-Fedw, Cymmer, Port Talbot as one of the worst locations for broadband connectivity, with residents experiencing speeds as low as 0.81 Mbps. This speed falls below the minimum requirement for streaming services like Netflix and Disney+.

Comparatively, Heol-Y-Fedw, Cymmer is 1,494 times slower than the fastest street in the UK, where downloading a movie would take just 40 seconds. Other areas facing similar challenges include Turnberry Crescent in Aberdeen, Wesley Street in Maesteg, and Occupation Lane in Lincoln.

The list of the top 10 worst streets for broadband speed includes:

  • Heol-Y-Fedw, Cymmer, Port Talbot – Speed 0.81Mbps
  • Turnberry Crescent, Bridge of Don, Aberdeen – Speed 1.06Mbps
  • Wesley Street, Maesteg – Speed 1.45Mbps
  • Occupation Lane, Broadholme, Lincoln – Speed 1.63Mbps
  • Rossiter Road, London – Speed 1.74Mbps
  • Quarry Close, Handbridge, Chester – Speed 2.23Mbps
  • Langley Street, Langley – Speed 2.23Mbps
  • Jessop Road, Rogerstone, Newport – Speed 2.62Mbps
  • Wakefield Close, Hurley, Atherstone – Speed 2.66Mbps
  • Rheolau Terrace, Pontypridd – Speed 2.80Mbps

For residents in these areas, there is hope for improved broadband access by considering a switch in providers or upgrading to full-fiber connections. Broadband Genie highlights that despite the current slow speeds, all ten streets have access to Fiber to the Cabinet broadband (FTTC), which can offer speeds around 35Mbps. Additionally, some streets have access to Ultrafast broadband and full fiber broadband, indicating better options are available.

To help improve broadband speeds, Broadband Genie’s Alex Tofts suggests the following tips:

  • Test your broadband connection to identify any issues.
  • Optimize your router’s position for better coverage.
  • Switch to the 5 GHz frequency on your router for faster speeds.
  • Ensure router security by monitoring connected devices.
  • Regularly update your router and devices for optimal performance.

While some areas struggle with slow broadband, there are locations with exceptional download speeds, such as Inglewood Avenue, Derby (1.210Gbps), Moatview Park in Belfast (1.146Gbps), and Reynolds Avenue in Romford (1.014Gbps).
