“England’s Mark Wood Faces Extended Absence After Strong Ashes Comeback”

England may have to cope without the services of injured pace bowler Mark Wood for an extended period as they made a strong comeback in the Ashes series. Joe Root’s magnificent unbeaten century, his first in Australia, propelled the tourists to a commanding position on day one of the second Test at The Gabba.

Root, with an unbeaten 135, led from the front as England reached 325-9, with contributions from Zak Crawley (76) and Jofra Archer (32no). Although Australia had their moments, the day belonged to Ben Stokes’ side.

However, concerns arose off the field regarding Wood’s injury. Initially ruled out for the second Test due to a knee issue, Wood hinted that he might also miss the following match in Adelaide after providing an update on his condition.

The 35-year-old, who bowled 11 wicketless overs in the first Test in Perth, expressed uncertainty about his return, mentioning the possibility of missing matches up to Christmas. Wood, plagued by injuries throughout his career, highlighted the challenges he faces in recovering and returning to action.

Former England captain Michael Atherton expressed concerns about Wood’s setback, emphasizing his importance in the team’s Ashes strategy. Wood’s absence in Brisbane led to spin-bowling allrounder Will Jacks stepping in, altering England’s pace-heavy approach.

In response to Root’s stellar performance, Mitchell Starc shone for Australia, taking 6-71 with the pink ball. The ongoing Ashes series promises more thrilling cricket action, with live coverage available on TNT Sports via discovery+ or Prime Video’s TNT Sports channel.
