Citizens have taken to the streets in opposition to federal agents implicated in two separate incidents resulting in the death of one woman and injuries to two others.
Protests have erupted in various cities and towns across the United States following the fatal shooting of Renee Good, 37, by an ICE agent in Minneapolis, as well as the shooting and injury of two individuals by immigration enforcement officers in Portland, Oregon.
The protests coincide with the implementation of what the US Department of Homeland Security describes as its largest-ever immigration enforcement operation in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul.
Despite widespread criticism, the Trump administration has supported the shootings, asserting that they were acts of self-defense against individuals who allegedly posed a threat by using their vehicles as weapons.
Many of the demonstrations were organized under the banner of “ICE Out for Good,” a wordplay on the acronym for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. This group and its local branches claim to have orchestrated nationwide protests last year, with gatherings held in every state across the US.
The Trump administration has deployed numerous federal officers to Minnesota as part of an intensified enforcement initiative, involving over 2,000 personnel. Some officers were reassigned after being abruptly pulled out of Louisiana, where they were engaged in a separate operation launched the previous month and scheduled to continue until February.
