Elected as the Labour Deputy Leader was not something I anticipated at the beginning of last year. It came as a pleasant surprise and a great privilege. Holding such a significant role in the Labour Party during these challenging times is a tremendous responsibility.
The members of the Labour Party chose me for specific reasons. They seek a Deputy Leader who can enhance the party’s performance, articulate our values clearly, and demonstrate whose interests we represent. They emphasized the importance of working as a unified team rather than engaging in divisive actions. I made a commitment to uphold both aspects.
The current situation underscores the critical nature of our responsibilities. Life has become increasingly difficult for ordinary citizens over the past decade. Simply having a job is no longer sufficient to maintain a decent standard of living. Affordable and secure housing is becoming more elusive, particularly for younger individuals. Rapid changes in the workforce, coupled with global conflicts and migration issues, have a direct impact on our community.
People from all corners of the UK are calling for change, to have their voices heard, and to be represented by politicians who understand their concerns. It is imperative for the Labour Party to demonstrate that we are addressing these issues collectively. Failing to do so may lead people to seek alternative solutions from those who make false promises. Transforming the country, public services, and the economy to prioritize the needs of ordinary citizens is a complex and challenging task.
To effectively communicate our message that mainstream politics can drive tangible change, we must put in the necessary effort, stay focused, and rally support rather than engaging in internal conflicts and finger-pointing.
For instance, the recent Budget proposal was distinctly aligned with Labour values. Measures such as lifting children out of poverty, funded by a mansion tax and fairer income-based taxes, highlight our commitment to social justice. Additionally, initiatives like pay raises for low-income earners, reduced energy costs, improved healthcare services, and enhanced education offerings demonstrate our dedication to serving the majority, not just a select few.
Despite frustrations over the misrepresentation of our efforts, it is essential to cut through the noise and effectively convey our message without airing internal disagreements.
Looking ahead to early 2026, significant Labour policies are set to be implemented, including improved sick pay, salary increases for low-wage workers, enhanced support for renters, public ownership of rail services, expanded social housing, a substantial increase in the state pension, financial aid for families, and the elimination of zero-hour contracts. It is crucial to champion these policies persistently as the opportunity may not present itself again.
With major elections looming in the near future, it is essential for all Labour members to unite behind Keir Starmer to prevent our opponents, particularly Reform, from gaining control of councils or power bases in Wales and Scotland. It is our duty as Labour representatives to prioritize the well-being of the country, work together towards a common goal, and combat divisive politics. Unity within our party is imperative to achieve these objectives.
