In a certain European country, the prices of food are so high that some tourists are resorting to bringing their own food in their luggage.
Iceland, known for its breathtaking Northern Lights display and stunning Nordic landscapes, is a popular destination despite its reputation for being expensive. Travelers have been seen carrying food supplies with them to avoid the steep costs in the country.
A traveler who recently visited Iceland decided to explore the local supermarket to gauge the actual food prices. In a video shared on social media, the traveler expressed astonishment at the high costs, mentioning that food expenses could even surpass the flight costs.
During the supermarket visit, the traveler discovered inflated prices on everyday items compared to what is typically found in English supermarkets. For instance, a small pack of strawberries was priced at 800 Icelandic króna, equivalent to approximately £4.75. Other items like a baguette, cheese sandwich, olive oil, and instant noodles were also significantly more expensive than usual.
The visitor also highlighted the exorbitant prices of specialty items like Serrano ham and hákarl, a traditional Icelandic delicacy. The total cost of a basic breakfast in Iceland was estimated to be around 2,000 króna (£11.87), including doughnuts, water, and juice.
Research by The Drinks Business revealed that Iceland stands out as the most expensive European country for purchasing wine, with a mid-range bottle costing around £18.30, compared to the European average of £7.17 for similar quality.
Despite the high food prices, Iceland’s stunning landscapes and attractions continue to draw visitors. While it’s essential to budget for food expenses, affordable flight deals and accommodations make a trip to Iceland worthwhile for many travelers.
