The rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine expressed excitement about being housed in the same prison as the ousted Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro.
Daniel Hernandez, known as Tekashi 6ix9ine, aged 29, checked into the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, New York, on Tuesday. This move followed his admission to assaulting an individual and possessing drugs in a gang-related incident last year.
Having violated the terms of his supervised release, Hernandez was sentenced to three months in federal custody in December, following a 45-day sentence imposed in 2024.
Taking to Instagram, Hernandez mentioned his upcoming basketball games with fellow inmates at MDC, where he will be bunking alongside Luigi Mangione, a suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO. He also recalled sharing a cell with Sean “Diddy” Combs and the ex-Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez.
This marks the second time Hernandez faced prison time for probation violation within a year. His incarceration coincides with the US military’s recent operation to apprehend Maduro and his spouse, Cilia Flores.
Noteworthy figures like Sam Bankman-Fried, Ghislaine Maxwell, and the notorious drug lord “El Chapo” have also been confined at MDC.
The facility, situated in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park area, detains individuals with pending cases in the US District Court for New York’s eastern district, including those serving short sentences.
According to a recent report from the Federal Bureau of Prisons, conditions at MDC have shown improvement since January 2024, with reduced violence, controlled inmate movements, and curbed contraband smuggling.
Despite the positive update, MDC has been previously labeled as a “hell on earth,” with two fatalities and multiple injuries reported in 2024 alone. Overcrowding has been a persistent issue, with the facility housing well over its intended capacity of 1,000 inmates, leading to concerns about substandard living conditions.
