Patients can now access specialized care for prostate, menopause, or eye issues through innovative NHS Online hospitals. Upon GP referral, individuals can engage with experts via video consultations using the NHS app. This initiative aims to expedite access to specialized healthcare, reducing waiting times by allowing patients to consult with doctors nationwide and avoid unnecessary hospital visits.
In a recent announcement at the Labour conference, Keir Starmer heralded a forthcoming era as the NHS revealed plans to launch the NHS Online service, focusing initially on addressing nine prevalent conditions. These include women’s health concerns such as severe menopause symptoms and menstrual issues indicative of endometriosis or fibroids. The service will also cover prostate conditions like enlargement and elevated prostate-specific antigen levels, as well as eye disorders such as cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. Additionally, NHS Online will offer assistance for other challenging conditions like iron deficiency anemia and inflammatory bowel disease.
While tests, scans, or procedures will still take place at local healthcare facilities, the new system will enable clinicians to remotely review patient notes. Face-to-face appointments will remain an option for patients, especially for those requiring physical examinations or procedures, which can be conducted at hospitals or nearby local hubs.
NHS England’s national clinical director for elective care, Professor Stella Vig, emphasized the positive impact of faster access to diagnosis and treatments for the identified conditions, acknowledging their challenging nature. Dr. Sue Mann, national clinical director in women’s health at NHS England, highlighted the importance of swift access to effective treatments for menstrual problems and menopause symptoms, underscoring the convenience for women to consult with specialists from their homes through NHS Online, enhancing their quality of life.
The NHS App, already accessible on smartphones and tablets, allows patients to manage appointments, order prescriptions, and access GP health records conveniently.
