A jockey who previously won the Kentucky Derby is currently in intensive care due to sustaining multiple injuries following a fall at Churchill Downs. Brian Hernandez Jr achieved a historic milestone in 2024 by being the eighth individual to win both the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby, a feat not accomplished since 2009.
His victories came aboard Thorpedo Anna in the Oaks and Mystik Dan in the Derby. Hernandez, aged 39, had been preparing Mystik Dan for the Grade 2 Lukas Classic when tragedy struck during the third race on Sunday. His horse, Sgt Garcia, suffered an injury on a turn, causing Hernandez to fall off.
Sgt Garcia was promptly taken off the track for treatment, while Hernandez was rushed to the University of Louisville Hospital for medical attention. Jamie, his wife, provided an update on his condition, disclosing that he had sustained significant injuries including 7 broken ribs, a punctured lung, a lacerated liver with a repaired bleed, and ongoing bleeding that is being monitored.
Acknowledging the challenges of a jockey’s life, Jamie urged everyone to cherish their loved ones and requested additional prayers for Brian’s recovery. Messages of support flooded in, with one individual praising Hernandez for his dedication to the sport and wishing him a speedy recovery.
