A remarkable hike in the Peak District, renowned for its stunning vistas, has been recognized as one of the UK’s finest accessible by train – conveniently located near Manchester. The Mam Tor circular route in Hope Valley secured the second position in a list of the nation’s top walks reachable via public transportation, according to research conducted by outdoor experts at Blacks. This Peak District trail narrowly missed the top spot, which was claimed by the Seven Sisters and Seaford trail in East Sussex.
The ranking was based on a comprehensive analysis of Google search data, All Trails reviews, and the distance to the nearest railway station for each walk. Mam Tor received an impressive All Trails rating of 4.8 and garnered a UK search volume of 1,127,000 from July 2024 to June 2025, resulting in a commendable score of 9.17 out of 10. The top spot was secured by the Seven Sisters with a score of 9.38, as per the Manchester Evening News.
Commencing in the charming village of Hope, just a short 48-minute train journey from Manchester Piccadilly station, the circular walk takes about one and a half hours to complete. This moderate path leads to Mam Tor, one of England’s iconic hills, providing breathtaking views of Hope Valley.
Upon completing the hike, walkers can relax at one of Hope’s historic pubs and cafes, such as the dog-friendly Cheshire Cheese Inn or the Old Hall Hotel. Nearby villages like Castleton and Edale also offer unique attractions.
Another notable walk easily accessible by train from Manchester is the Kent Estuary and Arnside Knott Circular in Cumbria. Starting in Arnside, an hour and 20 minutes away from Manchester Piccadilly by train, this route offers panoramic views of Morecambe Bay and the Lakeland fells.
Blacks recommended and ranked the UK’s best walks reachable by train, highlighting the ease and accessibility of these outdoor adventures.
