eBay Slashes Buyer Costs, Introduces New Fee System

eBay has announced a significant adjustment to its fee structure, resulting in lower costs for buyers. The platform has slashed its Buyer Protection fee from 75p to 10p.

In addition to this change, eBay has implemented a new tiered fee system for customers. Under the previous structure, buyers paid 4% of the item price for items up to £300 and 2% for any amount between £300 and £4,000.

Now, eBay users will incur fees amounting to 7% of the item price up to £20, 4% for any portion between £20 and £300, and 2% for any part between £300 and £4,000. No fees apply to items exceeding £4,000 in value.

Previously, a £10 item would have incurred £1.15 in charges, but this has now decreased to 80p. Similarly, an item sold for £100 would have generated £4.75 in fees, which has now been reduced to £4.70.

The fee adjustments apply to all listings, excluding cars, motorcycles, vehicles, classified ads, and property. For multiple purchases of the same item, buyers will only pay the 10p flat fee once.

eBay is also rolling out faster payment processing for select sellers starting from August 6. Sellers who have completed a minimum of ten sales totaling £150 or more in the past five days, with no more than two unresolved cases in the past year, will receive their sale proceeds within 24 hours of a sale.

Previously, sellers had to wait for two days after delivery confirmation to access their funds. eBay eliminated all selling fees in October last year, enabling sellers to retain more of their earnings by waiving final value fees, regulatory operating fees, and insertion fees.

While selling fees remain for car, motorcycle, and vehicle listings, eBay eliminated selling fees for fashion items earlier last year. This change followed the introduction of eBay’s default postage method, “Simple Delivery.”

With “Simple Delivery,” eBay calculates the parcel size to determine postage costs. Once an item sells, sellers can either drop it off at a carrier location or schedule a home delivery. eBay provides sellers with a QR code or label for posting their items.

Certain listings are exempt from “Simple Delivery,” such as low-priced items, bulky items, and products available for local pick-up.
