Snooker ace Luca Brecel, a former world champion, has opened up about his recent hiatus from the sport, citing a mysterious health condition as the reason behind his absence.
Brecel, 30, has been sporadically participating in competitions this season due to health concerns. Despite making an appearance at the English Open last week and reaching the quarter-finals, his absence since April at the World Championship raised questions. Speculation initially pointed to mental health issues, but Brecel clarified that his break was due to physical ailments.
In an interview with The Sun, Brecel dismissed mental health concerns, stating that he is mentally sound and happy. He emphasized that his health struggles are physical, undergoing numerous medical consultations without a conclusive diagnosis. Despite the uncertainties, Brecel expressed gratitude for being able to return to the game, highlighting the ongoing medical investigations into his condition.
Having previously clinched the World Championship title in 2023, Brecel’s ranking has slipped to 41st globally as a result of his health setbacks. While facing the possibility of dropping out of the top 64, which would require re-entry via Q School in January 2026, Brecel remains optimistic about his ability to participate in more tournaments to improve his ranking.
Renowned snooker figure Ronnie O’Sullivan remains supportive of Brecel, commending his exceptional talent and downplaying the need for stellar performances to secure victories. Brecel’s resilience in the face of adversity showcases his determination to overcome health challenges and continue pursuing success in the sport.
