Ben Shelton emerged victorious in an intense battle against Frances Tiafoe, positioning himself as a potential candidate to break his nation’s lengthy drought for a men’s Grand Slam champion. Shelton secured a hard-fought 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 win on Friday, setting the stage for a showdown with top seed Alexander Zverev in the U.S. Open final on Sunday.
Seeded eighth, Shelton displayed remarkable stamina following his defeat of defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in a quarterfinal clash that concluded in the early hours of Wednesday, marking the latest finish in U.S. Open history. To clinch a historic victory, Shelton must overcome French Open winner Zverev and potentially become the first American male to claim a major title since Andy Roddick’s 2003 U.S. Open triumph.
Expressing his determination, Shelton stated, “I’m fully committed to this opportunity and will give my all on the court. I urge everyone to support me in this endeavor for the USA.” In the first semifinal, Zverev defeated Karen Khachanov 6-3, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (6), setting the stage for an exciting final clash.
The high-profile Shelton-Tiafoe match attracted a star-studded audience, including sports icons like Serena Williams, Jalen Brunson, and Trinity Rodman, the girlfriend of Shelton, alongside actors Salma Hayek, Ben Stiller, and Rami Malek. Both Shelton and Tiafoe put on an impressive performance, advancing to the final after enduring match tiebreakers in the previous round. Shelton, a 23-year-old from Georgia, is poised to compete in his first major final.
Reflecting on his journey, Shelton remarked, “This is the pinnacle we strive for: reaching the final stages of this tournament. It’s a surreal feeling to showcase our skills in front of this enthusiastic crowd.” Tiafoe, now 0-3 in U.S. Open semifinals, faced tough competition from his fellow Americans in recent years.
Following a poignant tribute commemorating the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Tiafoe initially displayed superior tennis in the first set. However, Shelton’s strategic serving and 20 aces turned the tide in his favor, leading to a remarkable comeback. With a commanding performance, Shelton seized control of the match, setting the stage for an epic final set.
Zverev, who previously struggled to secure a major title, has had a remarkable season, claiming victory at the French Open and reaching the Wimbledon final. The German player, known for his resilience, is determined to rectify his past shortcomings and finally clinch the elusive U.S. Open title.
