The provincial government of Prince Edward Island has introduced a new branding initiative called P.E.I. Creates, aimed at promoting Island artwork. Michelle MacCallum, the director of cultural development at Innovation P.E.I., expressed that the decision to create this branding has been a long time in the making. She highlighted the need for a unified brand to showcase the diverse and creative projects that receive funding in P.E.I.
The newly launched branding incorporates a unique logo designed by local artists from One Stone Studio & Design. The logo features sea glass-like silhouettes representing the distinctive geography of the island, including its red soil, green fields, and blue waters. According to the branding guide, this initiative will help people identify various products such as pottery, art, albums, and films produced in P.E.I. with government support.
Jenn Redmond, the minister of economic development, trade, and artificial intelligence, emphasized that P.E.I. Creates will serve as a cohesive brand to elevate the talent and creativity present in the province. The initiative aims to enhance P.E.I.’s competitive edge in industries like television, film, and music, fostering growth and recognition for local artists and creators.
MacCallum noted that the branding has been integrated across different creative platforms, including art installations, film credits, and music albums. The initiative seeks to attract attention from individuals outside the province, showcasing the vibrant artistic community in P.E.I. and encouraging further exploration of its cultural offerings.
A report by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce revealed that P.E.I.’s arts and culture sector contributed $305 million to the GDP in 2023, positioning Atlantic Canada as having significant job growth potential in the industry. MacCallum emphasized that P.E.I. Creates plays a vital role in enhancing the perception of the province’s creative industry, highlighting its dynamic and versatile nature.
The P.E.I. Creates initiative will culminate in the hosting of the P.E.I. Arts Awards ceremony in November, with nominations open until October 5. This event aims to recognize and celebrate the achievements of artists and creators in Prince Edward Island.
