“Global Coral Decline Raises Alarm as El Niño Threat Looms”

A recent global report highlights a significant decrease in the presence of living, hard coral formations on the world’s reefs. The report also indicates a potential intensification of the upcoming El Niño event, which could set new records for heat levels. Climate-related factors like marine heatwaves and bleaching events have led to a decline in hard coral coverage globally to around 25%. This marks a notable drop from the 1980s when coral cover was above 30-40%.

Research findings suggest that the frequency of extreme ocean heat events is accelerating, making the recovery window for corals shorter. The rate of recent coral cover decline compared to previous decades is alarming at 9.5%. This decline, attributed to climate change, is impacting coral reefs worldwide.

The report, based on data from nearly 37,000 reef sites, illustrates a consistent downward trend in hard coral cover since 1980. The aftermath of global bleaching events weakens corals, making them susceptible to diseases and further decline. Despite the potential for recovery, the increasing frequency of bleaching events poses a threat to coral resilience.

Regions such as Australia, the eastern Pacific, the Caribbean, and the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea are witnessing coral declines, while other areas remain stable or show growth. Human activities, such as fossil fuel burning, contribute to ocean warming, leading to more intense marine heatwaves that affect coral reefs globally.

Efforts to enhance coral reef resilience require global and regional interventions, focusing on curbing overfishing, pollution, and coastal development. The report emphasizes the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to mitigate the impacts of climate change on coral reefs. The looming threat of a powerful El Niño event raises concerns about the future of corals and underscores the need for immediate action to protect these vital ecosystems.
