Female Hiker Dies in Tragic Fall at Mount Yamnuska

A tragic incident occurred at Mount Yamnuska as a female hiker lost her life last week, as confirmed by authorities. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) responded to a distress call from Kananaskis Country on August 19 around 5 p.m. when a fellow hiker witnessed the woman’s fall.

Constable Sandra Geiger mentioned that investigations are ongoing, but there are no suspicions of foul play surrounding the hiker’s death. Besides the RCMP, Kananaskis Emergency Services, Alberta conservation officers, and Alpine Helicopters were present at the scene.

Emergency Health Services Alberta’s public information officer, Stuart Brideaux, noted that paramedics were dispatched around 6 p.m. but were eventually called off before reaching the location. Regrettably, this incident marks the fourth hiking-related fatality in the Banff National Park and Kananaskis Country region since June.

Mount Yamnuska, based on trail data acquired through a CBC News information request, stands out as a highly frequented hiking destination in Kananaskis Country. The hike has consistently attracted an average of 43,080 hikers annually from 2022 to 2025. Due to its popularity and history of incidents, the trail underwent safety enhancements through a realignment project in 2020-21.

Tragically, this is not the first fatality on Mount Yamnuska, with previous incidents occurring in 2023 and September of the previous year.
