NHL prospect Matthew Mayich, a native of Hamilton who previously competed with the Ottawa 67’s in junior hockey, is currently hospitalized in Arizona due to an incident during off-ice training, according to the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). The OHL has expressed its support and well wishes for the 21-year-old Mayich.
Matthew Mayich, a defenseman, was chosen by the St. Louis Blues in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL draft. His player history indicates that he played youth hockey with the Hamilton Huskies from 2016 to 2020 before joining the 67’s. Reports suggest that he was admitted to the hospital on August 20 while preparing for the upcoming 2026-27 season in Arizona.
In response to inquiries, Arizona State University, where Mayich is listed as a player, confirmed that a student from the hockey team collapsed during a morning outdoor exercise session and is currently hospitalized. The university refrained from disclosing the student’s identity and stated that an investigation into the workout circumstances is ongoing.
Doug Armstrong, the President of Hockey Operations for the St. Louis Blues, issued a statement expressing the organization’s thoughts and prayers for Matthew Mayich’s recovery and well-being during his medical treatment in Arizona. He extended the Blues’ deepest support to Mayich’s family, friends, and teammates during this challenging period.
OHL Commissioner Bryan Crawford echoed similar sentiments, conveying the league’s support to Matthew, his parents, and the entire Mayich family. The Hamilton Steel Hockey Club, formerly known as the Huskies, previously celebrated Mayich’s milestones in 2021 when he joined the 67’s and in 2023 when he was drafted by the Blues, highlighting his long-standing history with the organization since childhood.
