Canadian Duo Falls Short in Montreal Elite16 Semis

The Canadian pair of Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson faced a defeat in the Montreal Elite16 tournament semifinals, losing 21-19, 20-22, 15-7 against Brazil’s Thamela Galil and Victoria Tosta on Sunday. Wilkerson led the Canadian team with 29 points, comprising 20 kills, eight blocks, and a serve point, while Humana-Paredes contributed 13 points, including 12 kills and a serve point. Despite this loss dashing their hopes for a third consecutive victory, the Canadians are set to compete for the bronze medal against Germany’s Svenja Müller and Cinja Tillmann later in the day.

Viewers can catch the live broadcast of the event on CBCSports.ca and CBC Gem. The duo of Humana-Paredes and Wilkerson had previously clinched the Montreal titles in 2023 and 2025, with an Olympic silver medal secured in between.

In another development, Canada’s Sam Schachter and Jonathan Pickett caused a major upset by defeating the top-ranked pair of Jacob Hölting Nilsson and Elmer Andersson to advance to the men’s semifinals at the FIVB Beach Pro Tour event on Saturday. However, the 39th-ranked Canadian team fell short in the semifinals on Sunday morning, suffering a 2-1 defeat (21-12, 16-21, 16-14) against Brazil’s Renato Andrew Lima de Carvalho and André Loyola Stein. Schachter and Pickett are now gearing up to face Norway’s Hendrik Mol and Mathias Berntsen in the battle for the third-place position.
