From red light face masks to injectable moisturizers, the market for anti-aging products and procedures is booming. Recent research suggests that women are now feeling the pressure to maintain a youthful appearance at an earlier age.
Driven by the surge of anti-aging content on social media, Megan Lindloff, a psychology PhD graduate from Western University, embarked on a study to delve into this phenomenon. Her investigation revealed that exposure to aging stigma, particularly online, is contributing to heightened anxiety about aging among young women. This anxiety is leading them to seek out anti-aging solutions like preventive Botox and fillers.

Lindloff noted, “There is a growing narrative targeting young women, pushing them towards these preventive measures, which puts immense pressure on them and heightens appearance-related concerns.”
Surveying 415 women aged 18 to 35, Lindloff discovered that 84% were using products like retinol and wrinkle patches, while about 28% had turned to procedures such as Botox, fillers, and chemical peels.
Interestingly, Lindloff’s study also revealed that the use of anti-aging products and procedures did not necessarily equate to increased satisfaction with one’s appearance. Instead, it often left individuals feeling less authentic.
She voiced her concern, stating, “This trend is pressuring individuals who have already invested significantly in beauty treatments to further dedicate time and money to these procedures, which is worrisome.”
Struggling with Aging Anxiety
Katie McKeown, a registered psychotherapist and founder of Modern Psych, regularly encounters individuals grappling with the societal expectation to maintain a youthful look.
McKeown highlighted, “In our clinical practice, many women express dissatisfaction with their bodies and anxiety surrounding aging, leading to obsessive efforts to preserve a youthful appearance.”

Witnessing women in their early 20s opting for procedures like lip fillers and Botox, marketed as preventive measures, McKeown emphasized the transient nature of confidence post-procedure. She noted that individuals often set new beauty standards, perpetuating a cycle of chasing perfection.
The pressure to stay young actually ignores the growth and wisdom that comes with age.– Katie McKeown, founder of Modern Psych
McKeown added, “By fixating on one issue after another, we fail to appreciate the growth and wisdom that aging brings.”
She stressed the importance of valuing oneself beyond physical appearance and not succumbing to societal pressures that disregard the benefits of aging.
