“Charlottetown Continues Search for Police Chief”

Charlottetown, the capital city of Prince Edward Island, is still in search of a permanent police chief after Brad MacConnell transitioned to the role of chief administrative officer more than a year ago. Despite efforts to recruit a new chief, two candidates who were offered the position eventually turned it down. MacConnell, who served with Charlottetown Police Services for over 30 years, emphasized the importance of a thorough selection process to ensure the right fit for the chief of police role.

Since the city’s establishment in 1855, there have been only 15 full-time police chiefs, making the current search for the 16th chief a pivotal task. MacConnell highlighted the significance of this leadership position, stating that the police chief in Charlottetown plays a crucial role in the community, connecting with various city departments, government entities, and the Island at large.

In the absence of a permanent chief, interim chiefs from within the police force have been managing Charlottetown Police Services. MacConnell acknowledged the challenges of temporary leadership but expressed gratitude for the internal officers who have maintained continuity during this transition period.

MacConnell, who shifted from chief of police to CAO, affirmed his satisfaction with his new role and the opportunities it presents to serve the city in a different capacity. He emphasized the learning process involved in his current position, focusing on enhancing city operations and financial management. With a keen eye on financial stewardship and service delivery amidst global uncertainties and urban growth, MacConnell highlighted the city’s development of a new strategic plan, emphasizing public engagement and collaboration with council members to shape the city’s future.
