“New Snake Species Named after Slash Unveiled in Chicago”

A new snake species has been discovered in the jungle, and its name pays homage to a well-known rock musician. The Field Museum in Chicago recently unveiled a newly identified groundsnake from New Guinea, naming it Lielaphis slashi after Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash.

This reddish-brown snake, measuring approximately 71 centimeters, is now officially recognized as Slash’s groundsnake. Slash, known for his love of reptiles, expressed deep gratitude for this recognition, describing himself as a “long-time herpephile.”

Sara Ruane, the Field Museum’s herpetology curator, shared that her fascination with reptiles began at a young age. She recalled seeing Slash on the cover of a magazine holding a python and dreamed of one day naming a snake after him. Ruane considered naming a new species a privilege and found naming the snake after Slash to be the highlight of the project.

The discovery of Slash’s groundsnake dates back to 2006 when Chris Austin, a herpetology professor, encountered it during fieldwork in New Guinea. The island, known for its rich biodiversity, poses challenges for researchers due to its dense forests and the similarity between venomous and non-venomous snake species.

Genetic analysis confirmed the distinctiveness of Lielaphis slashi within its genus. Researchers believe the snake primarily preys on small lizards and reptile eggs, using its specialized teeth. Despite its unique features, Slash’s groundsnake poses no threat to humans, as it lacks venom capable of causing harm.

Conservationists highlight the environmental threats faced by Slash’s groundsnakes due to activities such as coffee farming and mining in their habitats. Naming the snake after Slash not only honors the musician but also raises awareness about the importance of preserving the ecosystem where these snakes reside.

In conclusion, while Guns N’ Roses may have once been labeled as the “most dangerous band in the world,” Slash’s namesake snake symbolizes a peaceful existence in the jungles of New Guinea, now eternally linked to the world of rock and roll.
