The nomination period for the 2026 municipal election in Thunder Bay has ended, with a diverse range of candidates putting their names forward. Scheduled for October 26, the election will decide the mayor, five at-large councillors, seven ward councillors, and school board trustees.
With Mayor Ken Boshcoff and several councillors opting not to seek re-election, the upcoming council will see significant turnover. Noteworthy candidates who have submitted their nomination papers include Trevor Giertuga, Maureen (Moe) Comuzzi, and Volker Kromm for the mayoral race.
Key contenders for councillor-at-large positions include Robert Trevisan, Peng You, and Dino Menei. In various wards like Current River, Red River, and McIntyre, incumbents like Andrew Foulds and Albert Aiello face new challengers like Stephane Leonard Kuziora and Brian Phillips.
The race for school board trustees also features familiar faces and newcomers vying for positions on the Lakehead Public Schools trustee board, Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board trustee board, Conseil scolaire du Grand Nord trustee board, and Conseil scolaire de district catholique des Aurores boréales trustee board.
All candidates are pending certification by the city before officially entering the election. The certification process is set for Monday.
