“Eastend Scenic Rail Tours: Bringing History to Life”

Gary Southgate’s dream of showcasing the stories of the “Valley of Hidden Secrets” in southwest Saskatchewan’s Frenchman River Valley has come to life through the Eastend Scenic Rail Tours. A passionate farmer from North Battleford, Sask., Southgate has been working for years to bring his vision to reality.

His journey with trains started in childhood, fueled by a fascination with steam locomotives passing by. In 2013, Southgate began collecting old trains, aiming not only to own them but also to put them back into service. His collection includes a variety of rail cars, with a focus on recreating the ambiance of the old Super Continental passenger trains.

Southgate’s efforts have led to the preservation of historical trains that would have otherwise faced the salvage yards. Some of his rail cars have even appeared in movies like the Polar Express series. His dedication to restoring and utilizing these trains has garnered appreciation from railway enthusiasts and locals alike.

Despite facing challenges, such as disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Southgate has successfully launched the Eastend Scenic Rail Tours. The scenic train rides have attracted visitors from far and wide, with plans for further expansion, including an RV park, a museum, and maintenance facilities at the railyard.

With a strong belief in the project’s potential, Southgate aims to ensure the long-term sustainability of the tour and hopes that others will continue his legacy of preserving history. As he navigates the journey ahead, Southgate remains determined to see his vision flourish, making a unique mark on Eastend, Saskatchewan, and beyond.
