“Final Yorkville Murals Festival This Weekend”

After operating for seven years, the creator of the Yorkville Murals festival has announced that this year’s event will be the final one. Alan Ganev, who initiated the festival outside his Yorkville gallery in 2019, expressed gratitude for the city’s past support but noted the absence of grants this year.

The festival, which transforms Yorkville Avenue into an open-air gallery, drew over 70,000 visitors last year. While private investors have historically provided around 60% of the festival’s annual funding, Ganev emphasized the necessity of grants for its continuation, especially after being denied funding following its most successful year to date.

City grants, including those from the Cultural Festivals Funding Program and the Special Event Stabilization Initiative, have become increasingly competitive due to a surge in applications. As a result, not all applicants, including Yorkville Murals, received funding this year.

In response to the festival’s closure, Councillor Dianne Saxe highlighted ongoing discussions within the council regarding the distribution of grant funds. Saxe emphasized the value of downtown festivals like Yorkville Murals, citing their positive impact on the community and the city at large.

Despite receiving a provincial grant, Ganev underscored the importance of securing further funding from the city or province to ensure the festival’s future. The last edition of Yorkville Murals is scheduled to take place this weekend, marking the end of an era for the annual event.
