Amsterdam authorities are investigating the identity of an unidentified man known as “Lucky” who suffered a medical emergency three years ago. The man, who experienced a stroke or brain hemorrhage on May 10, 2023, now struggles with aphasia, a condition affecting his language abilities. Despite efforts to trace his background, including the use of various aliases and a cash-only lifestyle, his identity remains a mystery.
Following a public appeal that generated numerous tips, potential links to a long-missing Canadian, John Russell Kenny, have emerged. Kenny, who disappeared from Vancouver over three decades ago, had a history of mental health challenges and transient living. Investigators have noted similarities between Kenny and the unidentified man, including shared nicknames and linguistic traits.
Collaborating with authorities in Canada and Interpol, Dutch police are actively working to confirm whether the unidentified man is indeed John Russell Kenny. While DNA testing may provide clarity, it requires a family member’s involvement due to the non-criminal nature of the investigation. Despite promising leads, authorities remain cautious about prematurely confirming the man’s identity to avoid raising false hopes among families.
Currently residing in an Amsterdam care facility, the unidentified man’s communication abilities are severely limited. He is known to speak a few English words but lacks decision-making capacity. Prior to his medical incident, he was involved in a Buddhist community and may have ties to Nepal. Retired detectives are spearheading the identification process in hopes of connecting him with any potential family members for a brighter future.
