The Royal Canadian Legion is commemorating its 100th anniversary by extending complimentary membership to new joiners this year. Ray Gaudet, the membership chairperson at Kingston Branch #30 in New Haven, P.E.I., expressed satisfaction with the initiative, noting a significant uptick in branch membership. Since the launch on January 1, 2026, the branch has seen a rise of 37 members due to this offer.
Nationally, the Legion has greeted 112,000 fresh members as of August 1 through the free membership drive, according to Jack MacIsaac, the vice-president of the Royal Canadian Legion Dominion Command. Before the free-year promotion, the total membership in 2024 was around 269,000, edging up to 270,000 in 2025.
Kingston Branch #30 has managed to maintain a robust core of veterans, as stated by Gaudet. The branch encompasses three membership categories: affiliates from the community without a direct service connection, associates with family ties to service, and ordinary members, including veterans, RCMP, city police, or allied forces.
Activities such as bingo, cribbage, and darts keep the branch bustling most evenings. Additionally, the space hosts community events, open pool and hockey nights, and is available for hall rentals for special occasions like weddings and birthdays, fostering a strong community presence.
The initiative to offer free membership aims to diversify the Legion’s demographic and attract younger members. This shift has seen 15% of new members in 2026 aged 40 and below, with 28% falling under the age of 50. The effort to modernize the Legion’s image and composition is gradually phasing out traditional stereotypes, welcoming a more inclusive environment.
To engage younger individuals, Kingston Branch #30 actively participates in school and youth programs. The branch supports an army cadet corps, hosts the Pathfinders program, and organizes essay contests across eight schools, involving students from Grade 1 through Grade 12. Additionally, a special initiative involves students visiting veterans’ gravestones to lay poppies, preserving the memory of the veterans.
While the initial year offers complimentary membership in 2026, there are incentives to encourage continued participation. Annual dues at Kingston Branch #30 amount to $50, inclusive of a magazine subscription and discounts at select businesses. New members in 2026 are eligible for a national draw to win a 2027 Ford F-150 pickup truck, with an additional ballot for those renewing their membership next year.
Both Gaudet and MacIsaac emphasize that the Legion’s support extends beyond material benefits, emphasizing the importance of backing veterans and enhancing communities. The Legion serves as a platform for community improvement and veteran welfare, embodying a spirit of collective support and camaraderie.
