“Tragic Drowning at Johnson Lake, 2nd Bow Valley Incident”

A tragic incident unfolded at Johnson Lake in Banff National Park on Sunday evening as authorities confirmed a drowning case. The victim’s body was recovered around 7 p.m., marking the second drowning incident in the Bow Valley over the weekend. The previous incident involved a 52-year-old man from Canmore found in the Bow River earlier that same Sunday morning.

According to RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Gina Slaney, the death is not considered suspicious. Details are limited as officials are still in the process of informing the next of kin. Parks Canada’s Banff field unit, along with Alberta EMS paramedics, responded to the scene, with visitor safety staff overseeing the situation.

Johnson Lake, located approximately 10 kilometers from the Banff townsite near Lake Minnewanka and Two Jack Lake, is a popular destination within the park. These recent drownings mark the third and fourth incidents in the Bow Valley this year, following previous cases at Canmore’s Quarry Lake on August 1 and Johnston Canyon in Banff National Park on May 1.
