“Fire Damages Construction Materials for Nunavut Housing Project”

A recent fire in Naujaat, Nunavut, caused damage to construction materials designated for a public housing project in the community. The Nunavut Housing Corporation (NHC) stated that it is too early to determine the impact on the project’s timeline following the incident.

The fire erupted near the hamlet’s waterfront on Wednesday night. Naujaat’s senior administrative officer, Chantal Pelletier, mentioned that the local fire department promptly responded to the scene.

The NHC specified that the construction materials were allocated for an eight-unit public housing development. They are currently awaiting the fire chief’s report and collaborating with the project contractor and local authorities to evaluate the extent of the destruction.

The completion date for the eight-plex is set for June 2027. According to a spokesperson, it remains uncertain how the fire will influence this timeline.

Regarding the cause of the fire and potential investigations, the RCMP spokesperson indicated in an email that the police currently have no information available for disclosure.
