Greer described the ongoing talks with Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc as positive and characterized Canada’s approach as potentially conciliatory.
Industry insiders familiar with the negotiations have highlighted that Canada views the August 19 deadline as critical, indicating a lack of willingness to continue talks if the tariffs are implemented. Greer stressed that the primary objective is to advance President Trump’s trade policies, with a focus on what benefits the U.S. but expressed openness to aligning with Canada if it serves American interests.
In response to the tariff threats, Canada is willing to address concerns raised by the U.S., including issues related to provincial alcohol bans, dairy quotas, and automotive tariffs. Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet expressed skepticism about an imminent deal and urged caution in dairy negotiations, emphasizing the importance of protecting supply management. Greer highlighted various trade issues with Canada, particularly pointing out alcohol bans and retaliatory tariffs as contentious topics.
Former Canadian ambassador to the U.S., Frank McKenna, countered Greer’s stance, defending Canada’s right to retaliate against what it perceives as unfair and illegal measures imposed by the U.S. McKenna criticized the notion that the U.S. can act with impunity while restricting Canada’s ability to defend itself.
