A woman from Nova Scotia expressed regret after contacting the RCMP to report a reckless driver, leading to an unexpected visit from an officer to her home. Robin MacDougall was en route from Antigonish, N.S., to Port Hawkesbury on Highway 104 in June to celebrate Father’s Day with her parents when she observed a vehicle ahead of her swerving erratically on the road. Concerned, she dialed 911 and was advised by the dispatcher to call back if the situation changed.
Less than ten minutes later, as she approached an exit for Port Hawkesbury, MacDougall made another call to report that the erratic driver was heading towards Cape Breton. However, she was surprised to receive a call from an RCMP officer while having lunch with her parents, informing her that they had mistakenly entered her house.
MacDougall, along with her partner, never locked their back door, allowing the officer to enter the residence. Feeling her privacy was violated, she sought clarification on the officer’s presence and reached out to a friend, Jade Lowe, who described the officer as apologetic and slightly flustered.
While MacDougall questions the handling of the situation and worries about future incidents, RCMP Staff Sgt. Kimberly Hillier defends the officers’ actions. Hillier explains that due to a disconnected call from MacDougall, a safety check was initiated at her home to ensure no emergency occurred.
Discrepancies exist between MacDougall and Hillier regarding the dropped call, with MacDougall attributing it to poor cell coverage. She disputes making a third call and has requested call logs from her provider to clarify. Despite the disagreement, the RCMP emphasizes their duty to investigate potential emergencies following a dropped 911 call.
