“Quebec Farm Scammed $20k: Business Growth Plans in Peril”

Matt Penney and his partner, owners of Pengrove Farms, were left devastated after falling victim to a scam that cost them $20,000 and jeopardized their business growth plans. The scam unfolded when a supposed catering company contacted the farm, which specializes in selling locally sourced meat and regional products. Despite no initial suspicions, the situation took a turn during the subsequent order when payment issues arose, revealing a fraudulent scheme that caught the family off guard.

Square, the payment processing platform used by the farm, alerted the family in mid-June that all transactions with the caterers were fraudulent, leaving them accountable for repaying the $20,000 loss. Alana Cosgrove, Penney’s partner, emphasized the significant impact of this loss on their business operations, stressing the need to pay suppliers to sustain their livelihood.

The scam was executed based on establishing trust with the victims, as the fraudsters engaged in friendly interactions, picked up orders in person, and appeared legitimate. Expert Andréanne Bergeron highlighted the sophistication of such scams, exploiting trust to carry out fraudulent activities effectively.

In Quebec, merchants like Pengrove Farms bear the financial liability for fraudulent payments, as payment platforms are not regulated akin to banks or insurance companies. Frédérique Lissoir, a legal expert, pointed out the lack of safeguards for merchants in such cases, contrasting it with jurisdictions like the European Union or the United Kingdom, where legislation offers better protection against fraud.

The family’s plight underscores the vulnerability of small businesses in the face of fraud, as they are held accountable for losses without adequate protection. Despite the setbacks, Pengrove Farms is rallying support from the community and exploring avenues for policy change to shield businesses from similar scams in the future.
