Another feline has tested positive for raccoon rabies in Saint-Anicet, Quebec, marking the second case this summer in the Montérégie region. Health officials emphasize the significance of maintaining pets’ vaccinations current as raccoon rabies spreads across the Estrie, Montérégie, and Centre-du-Québec areas. They advise pet owners to ensure their animals do not wander outside unsupervised and urge everyone to avoid contact with unfamiliar domestic or wild animals, regardless of their appearance.
In the event of a bite, scratch, or contact with a potentially rabid animal, it is crucial to wash the affected area for 10 to 15 minutes and promptly call Info-Santé at 811. Swift administration of preventative treatment is essential to prevent the disease from developing.
Symptoms of rabies in animals include behavioral changes, aggression, biting tendencies, isolation, reduced appetite, excess salivation, and an unsteady gait. If a pet displays these signs, it should be isolated from other animals and humans and promptly examined by a veterinarian.
The Environment Ministry confirmed the first case of raccoon rabies in the Centre-du-Québec region in Saint-Eugène-de-Grantham. Residents in the Eastern Townships, Montérégie, and Centre-du-Québec are urged to report any dead, injured, disoriented, or unusually aggressive raccoons, skunks, or foxes using an online form.
