From Tehran to St. John’s: Iranian Runner Finds Freedom

Ladan Jahankha finds fulfillment in being part of a local running group in St. John’s, where she now resides. Moving from Iran, where women face significant restrictions in sports participation, Jahankha cherishes the freedom she now enjoys in pursuing her passion for running. In Iran, female athletes are mandated to adhere to strict dress codes and are often barred from various sporting events, as reported by the Center for Human Rights in Iran.

Despite her desire to run in Tehran in her 20s, Jahankha faced obstacles due to the prevailing circumstances. Now settled in St. John’s and working as a teacher, she reignited her interest in running after connecting with a colleague who shared her enthusiasm. Joining a running group through Facebook, Jahankha found support from a coach and beginner runners who welcomed her with open arms.

Amid ongoing tensions linked to the U.S.-Iran conflict, Jahankha views running as a means to alleviate stress and anxiety. She appreciates the opportunities Canada offers, allowing her to embrace activities that were previously inaccessible in her home country due to stringent regulations. Jahankha recently participated in a Pride race with her family and looks forward to another 5-kilometer race on August 16.

Expressing gratitude for the freedom and opportunities she now experiences, Jahankha acknowledges the contrast in her current and former circumstances. Running has evolved into a cherished aspect of her life, symbolizing her newfound sense of liberty and joy.
