In the midst of increasing desperation, the Unity Project for Relief of Homelessness is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a renewed commitment to fostering a sense of belonging and community among those in need.
Chuck Lazenby, the executive director of the Unity Project, emphasized the importance of individuals feeling valued and connected to the community as a crucial aspect of addressing homelessness and promoting long-term stability. He highlighted the significance of instilling hope by ensuring that people feel like integral members of society.
The organization’s journey began in 2001 when Lazenby, then a 21-year-old student at Fanshawe College, joined forces with poverty activists and individuals experiencing homelessness to draw attention to the issue at Campbell Memorial Park on Dundas Street. What started as a protest during the Canada Summer Games evolved into a comprehensive program, including a shelter, demonstrating a commitment to innovative solutions.
Today, the Unity Project operates a shelter in Old East Village and is actively pursuing the development of a larger facility to cater to the growing needs of the community. Lazenby highlighted the stark reality of escalating living costs and stagnant social assistance rates, emphasizing the critical need for intervention to support those facing financial hardships.
Furthermore, the rise in the availability of dangerous drugs has heightened the challenges faced by marginalized individuals, necessitating a holistic approach that not only addresses immediate needs but also provides essential long-term support for stability.
Lazenby reiterated that the fundamental solutions to homelessness lie in secure housing with tailored support services and in addressing poverty through increased income opportunities. These core principles remain unchanged over the past 25 years, underscoring the enduring importance of sustainable housing and financial stability in combating homelessness and poverty.
