The union representing WestJet cabin crew has disclosed the specifics of the tentative agreement made with the Calgary-based airline this week following a one-day strike. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) announced that the deal entails an increase of over 18% in wages over a three-year period, along with the introduction of a new “duty period premium” to provide compensation for ground work. Additionally, it incorporates extended time off, elevated food and uniform allowances, and other enhancements.
During the recent extended weekend, WestJet flights in various parts of Canada were halted as 4,400 flight attendants prepared to strike, causing disruptions for many passengers. However, a tentative agreement was reached between the air carrier and the union early on Monday, leading to a gradual return to normal operations for WestJet.
The cabin crew members are scheduled to vote on the agreement in the upcoming weeks.
