A man was fatally shot by police after he pointed a bow and arrow at them.
The incident occurred around 1:40 pm on Friday, January 16, when police responded to a welfare check at a residence on Quia Road in Gunnedah, located approximately 450km northwest of Sydney. Upon engaging with the man outside the house, he re-entered and emerged armed with the bow and arrow, directing it at the officers.
As per a press release from New South Wales Police, the officers had to seek refuge in their vehicle. In the ensuing standoff, the police fired their weapon, resulting in the man’s death despite attempts to save him at the scene.
A spokesperson for NSW police stated that a critical incident investigation was initiated after the fatal shooting in the western part of the state. The officers, part of the Oxley Police District, initially interacted with the man outside the residence before he retrieved the bow and arrow.
Subsequently, when the man aimed at the officers, leading them to take cover in their vehicle, the police discharged their firearm. Although paramedics from NSW Ambulance attended to the man for a gunshot wound, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
An investigative team from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will spearhead the inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The investigation will undergo scrutiny by the Professional Standards Command and oversight by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC).
