“Labour to Unveil Support for UK Pubs Amid Closure Crisis”

Labour is set to unveil support for struggling pubs in the UK, as statistics show that two pubs are closing each day. The government is preparing to introduce a package of measures to address the looming tax increase, with Chancellor Rachel Reeves acknowledging the challenges faced by publicans, particularly regarding business rates. The industry is eagerly anticipating whether the announced support will be temporary or provide permanent tax relief to prevent further closures.

Recent data revealed that 188 pubs shut down in the last quarter of 2025, with the majority being community pubs that heavily rely on beverage sales. The report also indicated a decrease in food-led pubs and high street venues. The Mirror has been advocating for the pub sector through its Your Pub Needs You campaign, advocating for assistance to landlords and the communities they serve.

Despite the potential aid, many pub owners believe that radical measures are necessary to stem the closure trend, which has seen over 2,000 closures since 2020. Pubs are facing various challenges such as changing consumer habits, increased wages, and rising energy costs, but the imminent threat comes from proposed business rate hikes due to the end of Covid-era relief and upcoming revaluations in April.

While the Treasury states that it is offering a £4.3 billion support package to mitigate pub bill increases, there are calls for similar assistance to be extended to other businesses affected by escalating rates. Data from NIQ shows a decline of 382 hospitality establishments in the UK from September to December, with fears that closures may escalate in the new year as consumers tighten their spending.

Karl Chessell from NIQ expressed concern over the persistent rise in operating costs impacting the hospitality sector, especially during a crucial trading period. Despite some businesses continuing to open new sites, weak business confidence and sales growth indicate more closures are likely in the coming months without additional support and increased consumer spending.

A Treasury spokesperson emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting pubs, highlighting the importance of the £4.3 billion support package announced during the Budget to shield most ratepayers from business rate hikes.
