“The Family Chat Campaign Promotes Safe Digital Usage”

As their 11-year-old son prepared to start secondary school in the upcoming academic year, Giovanna and Tom Fletcher made the decision to provide him with a mobile phone. Recognizing the importance of effective communication within the family, they understood the significance of managing and ensuring their son’s safety in the digital realm.

Giovanna, aged 40, expressed concerns about the vast accessibility of content available online and the potential risks it poses to children, including exposure to inappropriate materials and concerns about mental well-being. Emphasizing the necessity for parents to engage in open conversations with their children, she highlighted the importance of empowering them in navigating the digital landscape.

Following the holiday season, numerous children received smartphones as gifts, prompting families to navigate the challenges and benefits associated with such devices. In the upcoming year, a campaign named The Family Chat, in collaboration with Tesco Mobile, will be launched to encourage families to discuss the use of online devices regardless of their children’s age.

Giovanna shared her enthusiasm for being part of this initiative, citing the opportunity to enhance their family’s understanding and utilize resources provided by Tesco Mobile, such as age-specific toolkits and online support hubs. The couple, along with their two other sons aged seven and nine, utilize tablets for communication with family members, playing online games, and video calling.

When their eldest son transitioned to high school, they provided him with a restricted smartphone to facilitate communication while imposing necessary limitations. Maintaining an open dialogue with their children and explaining the reasoning behind the established rules and restrictions was deemed crucial by Giovanna to ensure their understanding and cooperation.

Acknowledging the importance of limiting screen time not only for children but also for adults, Giovanna highlighted their family’s practices of restricting phone usage in certain settings. She emphasized the gradual introduction of internet access to children based on their readiness and stressed the significance of responsible device usage.

To enhance online safety for children, several recommendations were provided, including setting up child accounts, ensuring accurate age information is entered, activating safety filters, utilizing parental controls, and engaging in ongoing conversations about online activities and smartphone usage. Dr. Rebecca Whittington, Reach’s online safety editor, emphasized the importance of prioritizing the establishment of a safe digital environment for children when introducing them to new devices.
