Detour Discotheque, a unique traveling party, is set to make its way to Matera, a picturesque city in southern Italy known as one of the ‘New Wonders of the World.’ The event, themed around the glamorous disco era of the 70s, will span from Friday, September 11 to Sunday, September 13, taking place at various venues including Fondazione Monacelle, a historic former convent transformed into a cultural center, and Area 8, a sophisticated space for artistic endeavors.
This exclusive gathering, limited to just 300 attendees, coincides with Matera being designated as the Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue for 2026. The weekend extravaganza will transform Matera’s unique architectural landscapes into vibrant disco venues, with the backdrop of the Sassi, the city’s UNESCO-listed cave districts, providing a dramatic setting.
Detour Discotheque, recognized by Time Out as one of the “Best New Things to Do in the World,” has gained a reputation for hosting events in remote and stunning locations worldwide, attracting guests from across the globe. Founder Jonny Ensall expressed excitement about returning to southern Italy, highlighting Matera’s beauty, cultural richness, and progressive spirit as key reasons for selecting it as the event’s next destination.
Situated in the Basilicata region, Matera is easily accessible from Bari Airport, offering visitors a glimpse into a well-preserved historical gem. The city, a former European Capital of Culture and a filming location for the James Bond movie “No Time to Die,” is a must-visit destination in southern Italy.
Past editions of Detour Discotheque have featured renowned DJs, and tickets for the Matera event, starting at £195, are now available for reservation during the pre-sale period. The launch party is scheduled to take place at the Aethos Hotel in London on Thursday, February 12.
