Barry Hearn slams Conor Benn’s split from Matchroom Boxing

Barry Hearn has criticized Conor Benn’s departure from Matchroom Boxing, describing it as lacking in class. Benn, aged 29, revealed the split on Friday and will now be managed by Zuffa Boxing, led by UFC president Dana White.

Despite a 10-year partnership with his previous promoters, Benn opted to join the Saudi-backed Zuffa team, citing an irresistible opportunity. Eddie Hearn tried to discuss their future collaboration with Benn, but the boxer showed no interest, which disappointed Hearn Sr.

Expressing his disappointment, Hearn Sr. mentioned his surprise at Benn’s actions, considering the loyalty and support the team had provided. He criticized the decision to abandon the team that had nurtured Benn, emphasizing the importance of loyalty in relationships.

Benn is now the second prominent fighter to sign with Zuffa, following cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia. Hearn had envisioned a bright future for Benn after his victory over Eubank Jr., but that vision will no longer be guided by him.

Barry Hearn revealed that after proposing a meeting to discuss the situation, Benn suggested involving lawyers, a move that shocked Hearn. Despite being the mandatory challenger for the WBC welterweight title, Benn defended his choice, stating it would have been unwise to reject the lucrative offer.

Hearn Sr. clarified that he wouldn’t have objected to Benn’s decision if it had been handled differently, emphasizing the importance of mutual standards and respect in professional relationships.
