Donald Trump has issued a dire warning for an upcoming “day of retribution” in Minnesota. Despite widespread criticism of ICE’s tactics and operations in the state, the US President has reaffirmed his decision to deploy more agents to Minnesota, specifically targeting Somali Americans, the majority of whom are American citizens.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump questioned whether the people of Minnesota want to reside in a community with convicted criminals, including murderers, drug dealers, rapists, and individuals from foreign mental institutions. He defended ICE’s actions, stating that their goal is to remove dangerous individuals from neighborhoods and return them to prisons and mental facilities, attributing the situation to what he called Joe Biden’s “HORRIBLE Open Border’s Policy.”
Contrary to Trump’s claims, ICE has been focusing on the Somali American population in Minnesota, where approximately 95% are US citizens through naturalization or birth. Of the around 34,100 individuals of Somali descent in Minnesota who were not born in the US, about 62% have resided in the country for over a decade.
While about 5,800 individuals of Somali heritage in Minnesota are non-citizens, the vast majority entered the country legally with visas or green cards, and only a small number are estimated to be illegal migrants. With reports indicating the deployment of about 3,000 ICE agents to Minnesota under the Trump administration, the ratio equates to approximately three agents per potential deportee.
Trump asserted that crime rates decrease wherever they go, citing an improvement in Chicago and claiming the removal of thousands of criminals. He accused Minnesota Democrats of benefiting from the unrest caused by anarchists and agitators to divert attention from alleged financial misconduct. He concluded his message with a declaration of impending retribution for the people of Minnesota.
“FEAR NOT, GREAT PEOPLE OF MINNESOTA, THE DAY OF RECKONING & RETRIBUTION IS COMING!”
