US Veteran Departs Country After ICE Arrest

A US military veteran is departing the country following the arrest of her husband by ICE agents during a green card visa interview. Matheus Silveira, aged 30, was apprehended by four ICE agents while discussing his green card application at the US Citizenship and Immigration Services facility in San Diego, California. He was detained for overstaying and remains in an ICE detention center.

Matheus and his 30-year-old wife, Hannah, a former combat medic in the US army, are now preparing to relocate to Brazil as Matheus has been granted voluntary departure instead of facing deportation. Hannah expressed concerns about the current state of America, feeling it is unsafe to stay due to government actions and uncertainty about the future.

The couple’s plans to settle down, start a family, and establish a business were disrupted after Matheus’s arrest during his immigration process. Despite legal advice suggesting he could proceed with the green card application, Matheus was detained, and due to a past DUI charge, he was deemed a community danger and denied bond.

Hannah, dismayed by the situation and the conditions in the detention facility, decided to leave the US with Matheus for Brazil, their ultimate destination. She voiced her disappointment in the country’s direction under the current administration and expressed doubts about ever returning, citing a sense of loss and alienation from a place they once called home.
